The magazine's sixth annual Black Women in Music event will also kick off its 45th anniversary celebration
Jill Scott will be the special honoree at Essence magazine’s annual Black Women in Music. The Feb. 5 invitation-only event, held during Grammy Week, will also be the official launch of the magazine’s year-long celebration of its 45th anniversary.“It will be 15 years in July that my first album came out,” Scott tells Billboard.com, “and Essence has been there the entire time. I’m truly honored.”
For the first time, music fans will be invited to join the list of industry tastemakers who will be attending Black Women in Music. Now in its sixth year, the event will include an exclusive performance from Scott. Established to salute the achievements of emerging and established artists and influencers, Black Women in Music counts among its previous honorees Mary J. Blige, Kelly Rowland, Janelle Monae, music industry executive Sylvia Rhone and singer/songwriters Solange, Lianne La Havas and Emeli Sandé.
In a statement announcing the event, Essence Editor-in-Chief Vanessa K. DeLuca said, “Like many of the female artists who inspired her, Jill Scott has touched the collective soul of women across generations.” Essence President Michelle Ebanks called Scott’s impact on music and the arts groundbreaking, adding, “She is a fearless innovator.”
