According to Fox 8 in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Oprah Winfrey was
in Winston Salem on June 2 to help arrange the memorial service for her
late friend and mentor, Dr. Maya Angelou. Dr. Angelou's son, Guy,
decided to have a closed service for family and friends on June 7 at 10 a.m.
at Wake Forest University's Wait Chapel, due to limited seating
capacity. Oprah and a handful of other were inside Wait Chapel for at
least a half hour on June 2, until 1 p.m.,
discussing seating arrangements, where the family will sit and how the
chapel will be decorated. Oprah tweeted on June 1 that she was at
Angelou's home, "sitting at her kitchen table." Angelou's family has
requested that in lieu of flowers or public memorials on campus,
donations be made to the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity at Wake
Forest Baptist Medical Center
Crooner Chris Brown was released early on June 2 slightly after 12 am
from a Los Angeles County Jail. Brown had been in custody since
mid-March when he was arrested after being expelled from a court-ordered
rehabilitation sentence for violating its rules. And a judge in May
ordered the entertainer to remain in jail after he admitted he violated
his probation by getting into an altercation outside a hotel in
Washington, D.C. last year
The Apollo Theater in New York City, a leading not-for-profit
performing arts institution, will transform its Spring Gala into an epic
birthday party celebration in honor of the storied Theater's 80th
anniversary on Tuesday, June 10.
This year's Apollo Hall of Fame will celebrate the eight decades of
artistic brilliance that has been presented on the Apollo stage since
1934. Special tribute performances include Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole
and the Isley Brothers. The evening will be hosted by Wayne Brady
EPIX, the premium entertainment network, will premiere a new 30-minute special series, "Personal with Bill Rhoden," on Wednesday, June 11 at 8 p.m. ET
with a pair of America's most elite athletes and personalities, NFL
Hall of Famer Calvin Hill and his son, recently retired NBA superstar
